Customer Review: Belkin trumps Toshiba.

Since I've enjoyed trouble free-service with a 500GB Toshiba drive for 3 years, I decided to pass up the front-running Belkin hub (in Amazon sales) and spend a couple of bucks more on this Toshiba hub. My purpose was to use it with a non-powered Omega 320GB drive in tandem with a Macbook. But when I plugged the Omega into the Toshiba hub, the drive was not seen by my Macbook. It was then that I noticed the description on the back cover of the Toshiba carton: "Runs with Windows Vista." No mention whatsoever is made of Macintosh operating systems! So I ordered the Belkin USB 2.0 4-Port Ultra Mini Hub F5U407, which was currently showing first in Amazon's sales rankings.
Unlike the Toshiba hub, the Belkin saw my non-powered Omega drive instantly. Next, I decided to try both hubs with two powered drives that stand next to an iMac desk-top machine. This time the Toshiba responded like a champion--but no more so than the Belkin which, if anything, caused the two powered drives to appear a second earlier on the iMac's screen than did the Toshiba hub. This (admittedly) small difference in speeds might be attributed to cord length. The Belkin's is only 6 inches; the Toshiba's is at least 3 feet. Also, the Toshiba is obviously bigger, weightier, more solid, with a generous adhesive-coated base for computer users who hope to keep the hub in place (good luck!) and to work with it at a distance from the keyboard.
So, perhaps it's misleading to call the Belkin the better value or the better hub, especially for PC/Windows owners seeking quality and versatility. But if you're a Mac user who tends to travel with her hubs, there's every reason NOT to travel beyond the Belkin when shopping for an inexpensive, reliable hub.
