In 2007 my husband bought me a Toshiba Satellite laptop for my birthday. A little over a year later it decided one day - after no trouble at all - to just "not boot up." I contacted Toshiba and I was told to take it to a service center near my home. I contacted them, and I was told that if they could not fix it they may be able to pull the data off of it, and that I should bring in an external drive for them to transfer the data to if that was the case. Well, I didn't have one - so I went shopping.
I talked to the tech experts at Fry's Electronics in Wilsonville, OR, and they recommended either the Toshiba or Seagate 320GB external drives. The Toshiba was regularly only a couple dollars less than the Seagate, but they were having a special - $40 off the regular price. Well, I jumped on the Toshiba! Not only was it considerably cheaper, but my laptop was also Toshiba so I thought maybe it would be a more seamless transition.
Well, I dropped off my laptop and brand new drive at the service center, and a few days later got the call to pick them up. It turns out the hardrive on the laptop was completely fried, ane the only way to get my data retrieved was through a lab with a clean room - which they did not have. "How much would it cost?" I asked. Anywhere from $1500 to $2k was their estimate. Well, I guess I lost everything on that laptop. Luckily it was only a year's worth - I still had at least half of the pictures of my two year old little girl.
A couple months later my five year old HP PC started acting up. Oh no! I will NOT lose my data again!! I pulled out my brand new handy-dandy external drive and plugged it in. Worked beautifully... backed up EVERYTHING! Even after reformatting my PC several times it has still been acting strangely, so I left the data on the Toshiba external drive, and have been using it consistently to save everything since - to make sure I don't lose anything if my PC suddenly decides to bites the dust too.
Then this morning I found a job I wanted to apply for online. I pulled out my trusty Toshiba and plugged it in to retrieve my resume, and WHAT'S THIS???? IT WILL NOT WORK! Just makes a clicking noise and my computer will not recognize it. It's gone. The data is all gone. Everything. ASOLUTELY EVERYTHING!!! No resumes. No cover letters. NO PICTURES OF MY DAUGHTERS ENTIRE EXISTANCE! I have no pictures of her birth, of her first crawl, her first bath, her first steps, her first solid food, her first birthday - nothing.
There are no words that can explain how absolutely heartbroken I am. When I lost my laptop I kicked myself over and over for having not backed up my data. But this time I did!!!! The external drive WAS my backup - and after only four months of use it's all gone. That's twice bitten by Toshiba, first the laptop harddrive, then the external drive - all within four months time. I can rebuild my resume. I can write new cover letters. But I can NOT recreate the first two years of my daughter's life. My suggestion is that if you plan to use your drive to protect precious and priceless data - do NOT trust Toshiba. Take it from a mom who lost it all...

I then purchased the External Drive through Amazon based on Price. It was a real deal. And I am please with the purchase.
